Born in SPAIN in 1919, Leopoldo Novoa is a master of telluric materials, utilizing ashes, carbon, earth and materials of the Galicia countryside, the land where Bunuel was born. The artist, who holds within him the Spain of centuries past, the South America of his youth, divides his time between Frrance and Galicia. Strong in links woven accross space and time, he is capable of expressing the grandeur and the sadness of Hispanic countries with an unforgettable intensity and poetic mysticism. His semingly monochrome colors are of an exceptional luminisity and intensity.
He creates tension and relief in his canvasses, where light softly attaches and insensibly white turns to grey as light catches the material Whether it’s in formats where he concentrates with a poetric intensity or in larger ones wich provide a more serene approach, this painter is one of the master of contemporary art, renowned in Spain, France and Latin America.Galerie Horizon has organized several exhibitions in Marseille and presented his work in Palo Alto and Oakland.
Novoa had more than one hundred personnal exhibitions all over the word. The MOMA of New York acquired some art works as well as many Art Museums in Latin America.
Since 1992 he is working in Spain on a monumental wall made of dump materials thus demonstrating that any kind of material could acquire an artistic dignity.
